The Third Battle of Panipat was fought on 14th January 1761 between the Maratha Empire and the Durrani Empire (Afghans), led by Shuja-ud-Daula and Ahmed Shah Durrani (also known as Ahmad Shah Abdali), resulting in a decisive victory for the Afghans and marking the beginning of the decline of Maratha power in northern India.
- Key Participants: Marathas (led by Sadashiv Ballal and the Peshwa’s forces) vs. Afghan forces (led by Ahmad Shah Durrani).
- Outcome: Afghan victory; Marathas suffered heavy casualties, including the death of Sadashiv Ballal.
- Significance: The battle marked the end of Maratha expansion in the north and left a power vacuum, paving the way for British dominance in India.
The battle is considered one of the largest and bloodiest fought in the 18th century, with over 100,000 soldiers engaged and massive casualties on both sides.
