Lord Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva on the eighth (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Shravan. Before his birth, a prophecy was made that Devaki’s eighth son would be the cause of the downfall of Devaki’s brother, King Kansa. To prevent this prophecy from coming true, Kansa imprisoned his sister and her husband and ordered to kill all their eight sons as soon as they were born.
Kansa successfully killed the first six children of Devaki and Vasudeva but at the time of the birth of the seventh child, Balarama, the fetus was miraculously transferred into the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s first wife. The time came and the eighth child of Devaki, Krishna, was born exactly at midnight on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in Shravan. Right after his birth, all the security of the prison was disabled and again an oracle was asking Vasudeva to save the child and gave it to Nanda Baba and Yashoda in Vrindavan. Vasudeva completed the oracle and took the child to Vrindavan and returned back to jail with a baby girl. When Kansa saw the child, he tried to kill her too, but he was throwing her on the ground, instead she rose in the air and transformed into Goddess Durga and warned Kansa that her fate would be fulfilled and The one he fears has already been born.
